Thanks to all the teams that took part in the inaugural Westside Cup, held on the District Professional Day on Friday at Pt. Grey Secondary turf. Thirty U11 and U12 boys and girls teams took part in the one day single knockout tournament that incorporated handicapping for games involving teams from different divisions.
The handicapping led to fantastic, exciting games and will most certainly be used again for any future incarnations of the tournament.
In the U11 girls division, Darrell Hurst's Dunbar Wolverines edged Chris Walters' Dunbar Tornadoes after both teams advanced by one goal decisions over Bob Lunde Pt. Grey Devil Lions and Octavio Rodrgeguez's Pt Grey Canucks.
The U11 boys division proved very interesting with a few upsets and a few games settled by penalties. In the end it was Paul Sunga and David Finch's Kerrisdale Maelstrom that prevailed beating two Dunbar teams by PK's to win the divisions and a berth into the U12 tournament where they won their first game before bowing out in the semis. The Maelstrom were also the team that played the most games on the day, hitting the turf five times.
The U12 girls saw Stephen Lees Pt. Grey Silver team, the Dragons, defeat two gold teams with help from the handicapping system before losing to Steve Engh's Dunbar Fusion gold team.
And in the U12 boys division, the Pt. Grey Spitfires had to overcome an initial two goal deficit against Jeff Churchill's Pt.Grey Raiders Bronze team before in a very exciting game before going on to hold off Reg Spoor and Alan Russell's Dunbar United Gold team in the final.
In all almost 30 25 minute games were played between 9am and 3pm in weather that ranged from sun to thunderstorm but the strong concensus was that it was a great way to spend a professional day.
