The key to staying somewhat comfortable during the cold wet winter soccer season is to dress in layers using synthetic thermal underwear – long-sleeve tops for sure, and long johns when needed.
With soccer’s high aerobic nature, you won’t need heavyweight underwear – it will be too warm after a few minutes of playing. Choose from lightweight or midweight polyester fabrics, depending your individual metabolism. These fabrics will keep you comfortable, and will not impede your movement when worn under a soccer uniform.
Be sure to avoid wearing cotton apparel. When cotton gets wet it pulls the warmth away from your body, while synthetic fabrics maintain warmth by wicking moisture instead of heat.
Lightweight synthetic gloves are a must. Buy several pairs at your local dollar store and you’ll have at least one set when you need it. Lightweight toques are another option – if not for use on the field, then for whenever players are subbed off.
Warm, waterproof or water resistant jackets are also a must for the sidelines. If your team doesn't have a rain shelter to stow your gear, try to keep your jacket dry by placing it into a large plastic bag when you're on the field.
You can purchase synthetic long johns and long-sleeve shirts in child and youth sizes at Mountain Equipment Co-op, or at your local hockey sporting goods store.
